UPDATE (May
1, 2004): The Saturday after Easter, a 40-ft container was dropped
off at the Goehs' house. A group of people spent several hours filling
the container, leaving no corner unfilled. Some of the clothing
that had been collected did not fit and was donated to other charitable
organizations. But the vast majority of donations is now on its
way to Liberia.
Don Bundrick
gets much of the credit for the success of this shipment. He arranged
the details with the shipping company, helped collect donated materials,
and directed the filling of the container.
Henry Goeh
plans to travel to Liberia in mid-May to help get the container
out of port and transport it to Buchanan. But the container is only
part of this Hope for Liberia project. Additional cash donations
will allow the CEFL to purchase a small used car in Monrovia, Liberia.
UPDATE (April
10, 2004): My daughter Emily and I (Tim Slager) took
a Spring Break trip to SC. We brought the two motorcycles described
below, plus an additional motorcycle that was also purchased and
spruced up by the same group from Westwood CRC. We also brought
a generator and the two laptop computers from Calvin
College.
We arrived
at Henry and Willa Goeh's house to find their living room and dining
room both about half full of donated goods for Liberia. This was
in addition to a full 20-foot container in their driveway and more
in the garage and back yard. We may need to send two containers.
We have now
raised nearly $18,000. This includes the money designated for the
motorcycles, generator, and some medical supplies.
(March 18,
2004): So far over $14,000 dollars have been contributed. Thanks
to everyone who contributed.
A special thanks
to Brad Pennings for his work in encouraging a group of people from
his church in Kalmazoo, MI, to contribue funds for two motorcycles.
One of the motorcycles is a used dirt bike. The other is a brand
new Yamaha
Zuma, a gas-sipping, fat-tire scooter that will provide low-cost
transportation for teachers of the extension classes.
Thanks also
to Calvin College for contributing two laptop computers. Rick DeVries
was instrumental in procuring these computers and helped clean up
the hard disks in preparation for work in Liberia.
